Beau and Larry sat at a table while Rhona tore around the place on a variety of bikes. It felt good to take a load off, and it was great to catch up with his old friend. Larry had supplied him with all kinds of equipment while Beau had been on the circuit, and it sounded like he was still deeply involved with the BMX scene.

‘Youngsters these days,’ he said, ‘they’re all into drugs. Partying. All that shit.’

‘You saying we weren’t?’ Beau asked.

‘Well,’ Larry said, ‘I guess we were. But this is different. It’s like BMX is secondary to the lifestyle.’

Beau thought back to some of the wilder parties he’d been involved with. There had been plenty of booze involved. He’d never really gotten into harder drugs, but he’d known plenty who had.

‘I think you’re looking through rose-tinted spectacles, Lar.’

‘Maybe, maybe. Anyway, all that’s behind me now.’

‘You seem very… Zen?’

Larry smiled. It was funny to see his old friend looking so calm and peaceful. Wonderful, but strange.

‘Zen’s a good word for the way I feel, Jackhammer. But it hasn’t been a mystical revelation. I just found love.’

Somewhere, on the other side of the warehouse, there was a whoop of excitement.

‘Love, huh?’

Larry pulled out his phone and tapped the screen. ‘There they are.’ He held it up to Beau — there was a beautiful photograph of Larry with a pretty woman and two young kids: a boy and a girl.

‘Holy shit, how long has it been, Larry?’

‘Five years,’ his friend chuckled. ‘Long enough to change everything. You know, the older I get, the more it feels like the only thing that’s important in this life is love and family.’

Was this the same Larry who’d been his wingman on countless nights out? The same Larry who’d drank a damn shot of tequila out of a stripper’s navel? It seemed like a different life, and when he thought back to it, he felt — for the first time — glad to have left it behind.

‘Well, it seems to be working for you.’

‘Anyone special in your life?’

Beau sighed, shook his head. He couldn’t resist a tiny peek over at Rhona. ‘Nah. No-one.’

Larry gave him a look. ‘OK, then. Say, you gonna drop in on Todd while you’re in town?’

Somehow, Beau had managed not to think about his older brother since being in LA. Todd still lived here, doing who knows what. Beau had tried many times over the years to make amends with his brother for what had happened during the Olympics. He’d called, emailed, even sent a letter once. But he’d never had so much as a reply.

‘Things still not so good between us,’ Beau admitted.

‘Damn. Fucking family,’ Larry said. ‘Blood might be thicker than water, but it’s a hell of a lot messier, too.’

Rhona came streaking down the aisle on a BMX, looking like she was glued to the pedals. This was the one, Beau knew it.

‘Well,’ Rhona said, grinning and panting, ‘I guess I am a Kink girl, after all.’
